1890 New Orleans – Julien Dubois’ mansion
Hearon, on
the other hand, made herself known. She walked into the kitchen and saw the
looks on the help’s faces. One woman opened her mouth to scream but Hearon
moved so swiftly she was in front of the woman before a noise could escape. The
woman stifled her cry while her eyes bulged to no end.
Hearon
placed a delicate finger on the woman’s full, cracked lips. “Shhh,” she warned.
“Not one word.” She whispered so close to her ear, that her lips caressed her
lope. She glared at the helpers, making sure no one moved but her. She then
carried a tray into the formal dining area and set it next to the rest of the
hoard of food.
“. . . of
course this is a perfect time to buy up more . . .” Julien lost his wording
when he saw Lilly’s companion standing next to one of his business partners.
The man was intoxicated by the lovely Creole girl dressed in a plain white
dress.
“Julien,
why didn’t you tell us that you kept such beauties to serve you in your home?”
The man, Francisco Becerra, just so happened to be the appointed head of New
Orleans law enforcement. He was admiring Hearon as she offered him a drink. In
fact a few of his guests were political figures.
Julien
could hardly move when he looked into Hearon’s fulfilled eyes. While the
gentlemen snickered amongst themselves, Hearon’s eyes blinked ice black once
then returned to their emerald shade as her admirer turned back to her. She
played the bashful servant well. She was far from pure and though it had been
centuries since she’d lain with a man, his touch did not bother her. Other than
it being a human hand.
The color
washed away from Julien’s face and the glass of bourbon shook in his tight
grip. He tried to participate in the lighthearted banter but instead sweat gave
away his mood. Julien Dubois, a man of complete and utter control, was slowly
losing the battle. He hated it. He loathed the necromancer named Madame Lilly.
“Oui,
Julien, pourquoi l'avez-vous pas?” Hearon shyly asked Julien as her skin began
to turn coal black from her face to her neck, then traveled downward.
Threatening the host that his actions would dictate hers.
The already
drunken men were unaware of Hearon’s altering appearance, unlike the servant
girl. She covered her mouth, whimpering at the sight of Hearon, then rushed out
the room. Hearon smiled at the scared girl then her skin returned to her host’s
natural body color.
“Oh and
look, an educated, mixed breed,” Chief Becerra said, sounding a bit confused
about her knowing another language. “Do you teach her such verses in bed?” he
snickered. “What a trying task that mush have been, but a pleasurable charge
I’m sure.” The man raised a glass to Julien as did the rest of the men,
congratulating their host for educating a half-breed.
Hearon
eyed the chief as if she could snap his neck for his ignorance.
Julien
took a drink, angered by this sudden, daunting turn of events. “Trying is not a
word that I would use.” He cordially smiled then turned to Hearon. “Excuse me
for a moment, gentlemen. I must tend to her outspokenness.” Julien snatched
Hearon by her arm and escorted her out in the hall. There she squeezed the man’s
hand, removing his foul limb from her body.
“Shit,
demon.” He pulled his arm away. “Where is the witch?” Julien asked through
gritted teeth.
“Follow me,” Hearon ordered and
Julien begrudgingly followed her down the hall in his own home. Julien was
disgusted with the way Lilly treated him as if a domestic.
In the study Lilly was sitting on
his red chaise lounge comfortably with Theolus standing at her side.
“Hello, Cousin,” Lilly said before he could even
shut the door.
