Great author Carole Gill

Excerpt: A Ghost?

Excerpt:

"Old Pa was awakened by the sound of a woman’s voice. When he looked, he didn’t see anyone at first, but then his sight adjusted. He asked who she was—smiling as he did because as dippy as he was, he liked company.

She didn’t answer though, just came closer. The thing was, she floated toward him, her feet just inches from the hut’s floor. He didn’t notice though.

He did see that she seemed to be reaching out for him. Someone else most likely would have been scared shitless but not Old Pa.

He started to speak—just nonsense. He couldn’t form whole sentences any more as his brain wasn’t functioning, hadn’t been for a long time.

She kept coming closer, but stopped moving when Fred got out of his truck. And when Fred turned the door knob, she vanished as quickly as she had come..."

Book Excerpt:
Who are you, Thomas, and what do you want from me?”
Thomas said, “You may find this hard to believe. I still find it hard to believe myself, but I am God’s last prophet.”
The pope looked at Thomas, scrutinizing him closely. Thomas could see that he was looking for a sign or some indication that what he claimed was either true or false.
His Holiness walked up to Thomas, reached into his robes, looked him in the eyes, and said, “Forgive me, Thomas.” He pulled a small ornate bat from under his robe, and he whacked Thomas squarely on top of his head. Thomas fell over and hit the ground like a dropped sack of potatoes.
When Thomas finally regained consciousness, he found himself lying on a very comfortable couch with the pope seated across from him still holding the ornate stick. As Thomas’s eyes began to focus, the pope held up the hand-carved wooden bat and said, “It is a religious relic, given to Saint Peter by Christ.”
Thomas looked at the pope and said, “Your Holiness, you could have just asked me, and I would have told you that I am not a demon.”

Book Excerpt
CHAPTER 10
‘Now!’ Jurgis said, pulling at her elbow. ‘Shoot him now!’
‘Wait.’ Maud felt a great calm. This was what she had trained for. ‘Go below.’ She turned and shoved Jurgis into the safety of the hold. The ship’s officers had no eyes for her, as she crouched on the ladder and pointed her gun at the captain. Felrich stood transfixed, his face a mask of fear and hate as he stared at the approaching boat. He dyes his hair, Maud thought inconsequently and pressed the trigger.
For a split second, nothing happened. Then, the bullet blew away part of the captain’s head, scattering blood and bits around, and his pudgy body collapsed to the deck. Maud stared open-mouthed at the unexpectedly violent result. Then she jumped up, hooked the pistol on her belt and drew her sword. The mate and the bos’n stood frozen in shock, staring at their dead captain, until Maud’s battle cry made them start.
Desperately, the mate went for his weapon. He was too slow while Maud swung her massive sword, and blood spurted as his head took leave of his neck.
‘That’s two!’ Maud shouted. ‘For Kell and the Brannoe Queen!’ She turned and saw how Jurgis jumped over Felrich’s body toward the bos’n at the companion ladder.
Maud growled at Jurgis’ exaltation as he avoided the woman’s dirk and rammed Hala’s short spear into her side. With a single cry, the bos’n tumbled from the ladder, knocking two sailors into a heap.
Then Maud heard the sound of the ship’s boat scraping against the hull. Still screaming madly, its people boarded and engaged the crew.
The boy she’d seen before proved a slim brown girl, pigtail swinging in time with her rapier as she went for a club-bearing sailor.

Released Today: Madame Lilly, The Time of Sanura Vol 3!

History has a way of repeating itself

Madame Lilly journeys back in time to her great-grandmother's era, the time of Sanura. Both women possess more than a kinship for they are each bound to harmful spirits whom they refuse to relinquish. By the hand of a mysterious being, Elijah, Lilly is transported into the past to witness the dark path Sanura chose—ultimately leading to her demise.

Sanura fights to deny her ability to see the non-living, but the more she refuses the sight, the more the dead flock to her. A dreadful accident takes place, forcing her to finally accept her once unwanted gift. She soon welcomes the dead.

Through Sanura's struggle of growing up an innocent child forced to take on the burdens no one should carry, she ultimately transforms into a frightfully powerful woman. Lilly watches from afar as Sanura grows more commanding with each act of wickedness, until her final downfall. Even then, Sanura refuses to surrender her bound spirits for they need her as much as she needs them.

Excerpt
On the eve of Sanura’s seventeenth birthday she decided to face her fear. She had not planned on doing so when she woke up that morning but things do not always happened as intended.

Like before, Sanura was bringing in the linen when she took note of the same hidden door that was normally closed. It was cracked open. Ada had warned her to stay clear of the room but she could not help herself. Besides, the doctor was supposed to be out caring for the sick all day.

She placed the basket on the porch, grabbed a lantern and made sure no one was around. After double checking she pulled the door closed after stepping inside. For a split second she hesitated when she heard a clanking noise down below but she had to see the origin of the sound, as well as the room itself.

The further she descended the more the hairs on her body stood on end. It was not just the slight drop in temperature, nor her nose alerting her to the strange smell. It was the unknown. So she inched closer to the bottom, uneasy at the thought of what might be revealed. When she reached the bottom step she was forced to cover her nose. It smelled like urine and another odor she could not quite decipher.

Even with her light, it was still pretty dark. She held up her lantern to get a better look but it was too dim. The room was huge. There were no windows which was not normal for a cellar.

She crossed the room, bumping into a hard object, and nearly dropped her lantern from fear. Pushing away from it, her hand grazed across something sticky. Not wanting to face what it was she just wiped her hand across her clean peach dress. Trying to keep her composure, she moved around the object to go to the other side where she spotted two lanterns. She lit them both before turning around to face the inevitable, the truth.

The room was far worse than she had imagined.

Book Excerpt
The creatures that attacked them were entirely silent. One moment Hans was walking behind Heinrich, and the next there was a thin-legged thing—almost like a fleshy spider with a child’s head—on the man’s back, cutting his throat with a slender knife.
As Heinrich fell, blood spurting from the gaping wound in his neck, Hans stood there frozen as if he were watching the scene on a stage. Up ahead of him, Giancarlo had drawn his sword and was slashing at two of the creatures that had dropped from the trees above.
As the horses scattered in alarm, Hans watched as the thing that had killed Heinrich rose from the body and turned in his direction. Still he could not seem to move.
Hans realized he was about to die.
At the last possible moment, his arm became unfrozen, and he drew his rapier just in time to impale the creature as it leapt at him. Snarling and clawing at him despite the blade through its chest, the thing tore a long gash on Hans’ arm. But then Hans thrust forward, pushing it away, and it was dead.
He spun around just in time to see three of the things finishing off Tomas, stabbing him repeatedly with their knives.
Hans froze again. He might have killed one, but he could not see how he could possibly take on three of them. Then one of the things rose and sprang at him, and he somehow caught this one as well, running his rapier through its neck.
